Gestalten Space, Flagship Store in Mitte, Berlin
Gestalten are most well known for publishing books and developing content on visual culture, mainly focusing on design, illustration, typography, photography, art and architecture. One of the reasons I love their books, is that they have a great understanding of current visual trends and present each book after carefully compiling, editing, designing each publication. I collect a lot of Gestalten books, with my most recent purchase being the Monocle Guide to Business. A stunning coffee table book that tells the story of successful independent start ups and how they got there.
The Gestalten Space was one of the first places on my list to visit after I moved to Berlin. Tucked away inside a little courtyard, it's pretty hard to find unless you know what you're looking for. Inside is a beautifully presented open book shop with high table tops showcasing thoughtful design products that are handpicked and well crafted. It's a quiet but warm space, and I could easily spend an hour or more thumbing through the coffee table publications and magazines by Cereal, Kinfolk etc. The shop sells everything from chocolate by the Mast Brothers, Sandqvist satchels, cosmetics, pretty stationary and naturally, the packaging of everything is beautiful enough to inspire you alone.
The flagship store was opened in April 2011, and they have since opened another location on the roof terrace of Bikini Berlin. The integrated cafe at the Pavilion space, also provides an opportunity to meet other artists and designers through the special events they coordinate.
